Brooklyn, my first borough

As I stepped out of the airplane from an ATA flight from O’Hare to La Guardia, I was excited that Kuya Frank was there to pick me up.  Well, he is a familiar face since I remember meeting him from a beauty contest I watched years ago organized by my former high school in our hometown of Taytay, where Kuya Frank’s niece is one of the beauty contestants.  In my head, I was thinking at least I don’t have to bring a piece of paper with either his name or mine and I do not have to describe the color of my clothes anymore.

He greeted me with a smile and asked me how the flight was.  Well, I don’t remember much of it now, whether it was bumpy or smooth, but I know I was very excited because in my mind it is New York city where I am headed to and this place appeared many, many times in most of the American movies I have seen before I came to the US.  The drive from La Guardia airport to Canarsie was a smooth one as it was in the middle of the day when I arrived, at least before traffic  along Grand Central Parkway gets crowded in the rush hours, which is only in about few more hours.  A turn to Jackie Robinson Parkway in few minutes was made by Kuya Frank as we discuss familiar topics about his family and my family who are connected because Kuya Frank’s brother is married to my cousin Evelyn.  I hardly even realized how time was passing by as we chit-chat, with my occasional gasps as I look at the trees lined up along the highway as I imagined that there is probably less trees in New York city because of the many tall buildings that I saw in the movies or TV programs that showed the city as the backdrop or setting.  Few more minutes and turns, and we are already threading Pennsylvania Avenue, then Alabama Avenue and then Flatlands Avenue.  My excitement grew as I imagined myself living in one of the brick houses lined side-by-side and the petite gates guarding them that seemed too cute to look at.  Then another turn and we are at East 92nd Street.  Sure enough, Kuya Frank’s 3-floor house which he shared with his wife, Nida, and tenants in two of the floors was fronted by a small tiny gate.  I said to myself “This is it! My first New York city address…1618 E 92nd Street, in Brooklyn: the first Borough I am supposed to make my first taste of New York city life.”  I can see a new life before me smiling and the sun rays passing through the leaves of the tall trees touching my blushing face giving me a seemingly warm welcome.  My head was filled with numerous things to do: I will take the subway trains, go to Central Park, plan my first Broadway show and I will take a picture of myself in Time Square.  Well, tomorrow I will have to ask Kuya Frank and Ate Nida everything I need to know about life in the Big Apple and how to survive here.  Oh and I have to get that famous “I Heart New York” shirt because like everyone else I have started to heart New York too!
